We Need Your Input!

Posted by j.semo under Health, Sleep

My good friend Bart approached me the other week with two excellent questions that I want to pose to you. Here is the first question, but I am going to hold you in suspense and release the second one later:

Question 1:  Why do some of us wake up at the same time every day, and when we don’t, we get a headache?

Does this happen to you? Do you wake up at precisely the same time every day, say for example, 6.13am? Do you feel out of sorts if one day you sleep in? It doesn’t affect me personally, so I asked around the office and received a mixed response… Please let me know your thoughts. I look forward to your answers…

Be wise and have fun

We know that, in the USA, over 100.000 road traffic accidents a year are due to fatigue. We also know that after two days of sleeping less then five hours each night, our coordination capacity is equal to when we experience a blood alcohol limit that will see us losing our driver’s licence. If we already know these facts, why don’t have laws regulating fatigued drivers? We do not tolerate workers impaired by alcohol, but we have no legal recourse if the impairment is due to sleep deprivation. Will we soon be asked by police officers to “blink” at a machine to find out how many hours we slept and if we are driving “under the limit”?

One of the major restrictions for law makers is the lack of scientific evidence to demonstrate poor coordination skills when we drive and the relationship with the hours we did not sleep. However, good news is on the way.  A scientific study performed by M. Chattington of Manchester Metropolitan University demonstrated that: “…driving a vehicle requires coordination of horizontal eye movements and steering. Recent research has found that even a single night of sleep deprivation can impact a person’s ability to coordinate eye movements with steering.” This study is extremely important because it may allow law makers to start thinking about ways to introduce measurable parameters to regulate people driving under the effects of sleep deprivation.

Did you know that 20 to 30% of truck drivers’ accidents are due to sleep deprivation?

Would you like to know more? One of our Wenatex Sales Consultants, Rachelle from Victoria sent us a fantastic link where you can find excellent information and film in relation to sleep. Here it is and thank you Rachelle!

How important the quality of a bed is has been demonstrated in a police incident in the town of Okaloosa, USA.

A couple having marital problems and contemplating divorce had a fight over who would sleep on the couch. The wife said her husband pushed her off the bed onto the floor, which started the fight over who should sleep on the couch. The husband had slept there the night before, but was refusing to sleep there a second time. After an investigation by the local Sheriff, the incident was closed.

This case illustrates the importance of a good night’s sleep and the influence of the mattress to achieve it.

Until next time

The Best Video About Sleep!

Posted by j.semo under Australia, Diabetes, Sleep

The Wenatex website has received a “mini face lift”. Not being directly involved with this latest “plastic surgery”, I can honestly and objectively say really that it is friendlier, more to the point, and easier to understand… and I know it will continue to evolve and improve.

On the right hand side of the homepage www.wenatex.com.au, you will find a video masterpiece (total running time 12 minutes) explaining a lot of what you need to know about sleep. It was aired on 60 Minutes in the USA. Don’t miss it… it is really excellent!

Here it is

SLEEP SECRETS

Posted by j.semo under Sleep Deprivation

Yesterday, I had lunch with some wonderful people in a very nice restaurant called La Belle Époque here in Brisbane. Inevitably, my conversations always end up being about sleep, sleep, and more sleep. It seems to be that sleep is a “magnet” - it attracts people, lots of curiosity and sometimes glimpses of little secrets emerge…

While one group was discussing the relationship between sleep twitching, testosterone and what follows after that, the other was trying to make sense of sleep disorders and the Okinawa Diet. The food was good, but the people were better.

We left the restaurant content, full of ideas, and ready to tackle new projects: Vive LA Belle Époque!

The afternoon and evening passed without any major events, disorders, or surprises.

Extremely early this morning, I had to make a phone call to Oregon, USA and between a strong a cup of coffee, two stubborn eyelids, and a long time on hold, my brain replayed the conversations we had yesterday at La Belle Époque at almost the speed of light, giving me the impression that we (health mobsters) do not give clear enough information to fascinate everyone (almost) to make them want to try a healthier alternative.

In relation to Sleep Deprivation, I found two short (total time is less the 14 minutes) videos that where definitely more effective than my espresso to wake me up. I saw for the first time what happens in IN REAL LIFE when people are sleep deprived.

Have a look and let me know what you think.

Until next time, be wise and have fun

Excellent Idea To Educate The Public!

Posted by j.semo under Wenatex

Jane Meeuwissen sent us this picture. This mat is available in some pharmacies and it is used by the customers to sign the scripts. Simple, cheap and probably very effective.

Thank you Jane. Looking forward to meeting you soon!

THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE TO YOUR MOMENTUM

Posted by j.semo under Sleep

Farmers rotate different crops on the same piece of land to give the soil a rest and let it replenish nutrients. How do you replenish? How much sleep did you get last night? Two-thirds of Americans get less than the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Sleep can set the tone for your actions for days and weeks to come, not to mention your mood and brain power. Even small amounts of lost sleep add up to a sleep debt that muddles your brain and fatigues the rest of you. The negative cycle created by sleep debt may be the No. 1 way people destroy their healthy lifestyle momentum. Regular amounts of good slumber set a sleeping/waking rhythm that energizes you in the daytime and relaxes you at night. The more your body gets into the rhythm of regular sleep, the more the rest of your life can find a similar, consistent rhythm. So hit the pillow and hit your stride.

Just thought it was interesting…

Why Do We Sleep On The Same Side of The Bed?

Posted by j.semo under Health, mattress

My close friend, Bart Evers, asked me a question to which I do not have an answer. If anyone out there can help with the answer, it would be greatly appreciated.

For my part, I will continue to research.

The question is:

Why do we always need to sleep on the same side of the bed?

Until next time, be wise and have fun.
