Be wise and have fun

Women definitely don’t have it easy! PMS, the immense pains associated with child birth, enchanting the days and nights of our families, menopause and the list goes on.

If all this is not enough, menopause may be accompanied by unbearable temperature fluctuations… day and night… Or could it be something else?

In an issue of Harvard Women’s Health Watch, February 2008, it was reported that of 102 women with menopause 56% had hot flashes and 53% also experienced sleep troubles.  Although the study is very small it reiterates the need to understand if sleep difficulties could not be the origin of hot flashes in some women.

Talking from experience, I also know of men battling with sleep disorders also complaining about hot flashes…

This study can only reiterate the importance of ensuring that we all find the best possible sleep available.

So to the question….could a healthier sleep environment help menopausal women to achieve better sleep? The answer can only be yes!

Until next time

The Best Video About Sleep!

Posted by j.semo under Australia, Diabetes, Sleep

The Wenatex website has received a “mini face lift”. Not being directly involved with this latest “plastic surgery”, I can honestly and objectively say really that it is friendlier, more to the point, and easier to understand… and I know it will continue to evolve and improve.

On the right hand side of the homepage www.wenatex.com.au, you will find a video masterpiece (total running time 12 minutes) explaining a lot of what you need to know about sleep. It was aired on 60 Minutes in the USA. Don’t miss it… it is really excellent!

Here it is

Following this newspaper article , a team from the Centre for Community Child Health at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne Australia studied almost 4500 children twice, the first time at age 4 – 5, then again at age 6 – 7. Their sleep behaviour was recorded and analysed.

About one-third of the children in the trial reported poor sleep habits.

Children suffering from poor sleep habits may suffer strong detrimental effects

on their health, behaviour, and learning ability.

A simple check on the ABS website showed that in 2002, there were 4 million children in Australia. This means that there are at least 1.3 million children with poor sleep habits…

Hello… is anybody listening!!!???

Although, the science of sleep strongly opposes reading in bed, I have to tell you, I need to read something to switch off my thinking and help me get off to sleep. I usually spend 20 minutes or so reading some pearls of wisdom, and this puts me to sleep like a baby with a big smile.

I would like to share with you one of my readings…I hope you will consider sharing some of your favourites as well.

The book I am currently reading is called Virtue and Happiness, The Manual of Epictetus. Previous to reading this, I did not know who this Greek gentlemen was… but… Oh la la… he is amazing! I will leave you with one of his beautiful writings:

Signs of someone who is progressing:

He blames no one,
He praises no one,
He complains of no one,
He accuses no one,
He never speaks of himself as of someone important or who knows something.

Anyone For A Used Mattress?

Posted by M. Bennett under Allergy, Asthma, Australia, Diet, Sleep, Used Mattress, Wenatex

So the situation is this…… you are moving out of home and someone says to you ‘do you need a mattress, we are getting rid of ours if you want it? It’s only a ‘few’ years old?’ Sure you think.  The money I save on a mattress can go towards a couch or a fridge – brilliant!

This is the very situation my friend is currently in. Everyone wants to save money – the question is at what cost? This is the information I have given my friend to help her make an informed choice about whether she should accept the used mattress or buy a new one.

Here are a few scientific facts to ponder, before inheriting or buying a second hand mattress…..

1. Every person loses on average 250mls of sweat EVERY night – in a five year old mattress that is 900 liters of

fluid or 1800 liters if a couple shared that bed!

2. By the age of 70 the average person will have lost 50Kgs of skin –a large portion of this goes into your mattress!

3. Dust mites live in our mattress and feed off our dead skin. Years of dead skin accumulation in a mattress makes

an ideal living environment for dust mites.

4. Dust mite secretion is a HUGE contributor to some allergies and asthma.

A full list of scientific facts can be found on the sleep articles page.

Knowing these facts, will it make you think twice about inheriting or purchasing a used mattress?

Sleep and Cancer

Posted by j.semo under Australia, Cancer, Health, Sleep

Imagine this: one day you don’t feel very well and you go to the doctor. After what seems like an eternity of tests, in a monotone voice he tells you, “ I am sorry to inform you that you have cancer…”

some of the side effects of the sometimes extremely aggressive treatments can cause people to end up with a devastating sleep deficiency. These side effects include: nausea, constipation, vomiting, skin problems, itchiness, fever, heart rhythm troubles, breathing troubles, and many others. However, the most important challenge is to keep anxiety and depression under control. Depression works in a spiral i.e. a depressed person will experience at some stage sleep problems, and sleep problems may end up producing depression.

It is essential that every physician in charge of treating patients diagnosed with cancer includes a thorough diagnostic of the sleep status of the patient. Including a physician specialising in sleep disorders in your team can only be of an immense advantage.

Does anyone out there have an experience to share with regard to cancer and sleep problems?

Australia #1 Fattest Country!

Posted by M. Bennett under Australia, Diet, Health, Sleep, Weight, Wenatex, exercise, news

Australia: #1 Fattest Country

If you are anything like me you would have been shocked to hear the latest news that Australians are now THE fattest country amongst the world’s major economies, bulging past the Americans by 1%. More than one quarter of our population are now deemed to be obese, this is 4 million Australians! Add to this a further 5.4 million who are overweight. Therefore 62% of our population are now overweight or obese! This is one scary statistic!

There are so many contributing factors to our bulging bellies. We can blame it on cheaper prices of fast foods, the rising costs of healthy foods and gym memberships, our fast paced society leaving us with no time for exercise, or poor quality sleep. Whatever excuse you may use, the bottom line is that we are to blame and it is time that we get serious about our health and the huge impact this is having on our society as a whole.

What steps will you be taking to either reduce your waistline or ensure you don’t add to our ever growing overweight/obese population?
